  It actually wasn't that secret. It was very common.
  
  The Gnostic belief was widespread within Christianity until the proto-orthodox Christian communities expelled the group in the second and third centuries (AD).

  Kabalah is probably the closest thing that exists systematically today, though it adopts the dark side and attempts to learn the ways of the demiuege / gain his favor for greater control of the material realm, which is actually quite the opposite of the Gnostic teleology.
