Do you really hate ads or do you hate late stage capitalism. A flyer for a flea market is an advertisement for example.

@ReverendMoose people who hate capitalism and late stage capitalism often just hate corporatism and crony capitalism. Almost everyone I’ve ever had a proper discussion with about it (who isn’t a died in the wool communist) didn’t really hate capitalism, they just had a bad definition of it

@ReverendMoose oh absolutely! Most of us seem to think that this is inevitable simply because we got here, like we couldn’t have gone another way at some point over the last 100 years. Weirdly this passage from Atlas Shrugged has the best description of this current stage of capitalism and the hopelessness it brings.

Neoliberalism brought the idea that managed economies are bad, but just switched it from the government to the banks as to who would manage the economy

@BethanyBlack yeah that's what I'm mostly getting at with "late stage", although that might not be the proper usage. But yeah I don't think capitalism is per se terrible, just the version we've got going now.

@ReverendMoose once you get used to the idea that managed economies do better than free markets, you can start deciding who the economy is better supposed to help, and that leads to a rebalancing of both power and resources.

Deciding to use quality of life as the most important metric rather than GDP growth suddenly leads to a far far more egalitarian society
