     @adiz @thegreatape it is extremely common to block 25 by default even on vps because statistically 100% of the time traffic from a VPS on 25 is a hacked box making spam. running email on a vps sucks because you are pre-blocked by almost everyone anyway

     @Moon @adiz I'm going to be writing about the fun experiences of trying to set it up for myself in 2023 whenever I can get a message sent. I have learned that the internet mafia really doesn't want me hosting my own mail. Then again (some of) the reasoning is 100% valid like you said. Email spammers kind of ruined it for everyone.

     @mario @adiz @thegreatape what I tell people is that some people will have good experience and some people won't and it's not a function of your ability setting up mail servers 100% correctly.

     @Moon @adiz @thegreatape maybe i'm just getting lucky with my ISP but I've been vpshosting my mails using mailcow for a couple of years and it works great.
     Had one case where gmail had but it in Spam before, but apart from that I had no issues whatsoever

     @thegreatape if it gives you satisfaction to learn, it's definitely worth it. there are still many circumstances to host your own. SPC has a mail server for sending transactional mail, it's not a big deal if it gets blocked a lot and I don't have to pay anybody.

     Yeah last week I was basically like pic related thinking that everyone was just talking it up. Then I started actually reading more and trying to do it myself, and it's been days and I can't even get a message sent out. And I def know my way around setting up stuff in the cloud, this has definitely proven to be one of the more challenging things I've attempted.
     
     My hubris may have taken a hit but I'm still gonna try to see how far I can get. Even if I can just generate addresses to receive emails that would be kinda cool. Too bad almost every site will see a random domain and tld and say "that's not a real email" :niggaclown:

     @Moon Yeah for me it's mostly to learn the inner workings. I was going to do it from the ground up completely to start with, but now I'm going to get "Mail in a box" working to understand what an end result looks like (and needs). I love learning how these systems work in general.
