I don’t think I want to go full they/them with my pronouns just, but I really don’t mind what pronouns people use for me. I’m flexible. Use whatever you want, none of them will make me uncomfortable. Again, I avoided advertising this previously because it may just be confusing. I am choosing to do it now to show my allyship with the community.

I really enjoyed Andrew O’Neill’s interview with Dan Scheiber for the We Can Be Weirdos podcast recently, which apart from being hilarious at every turn as can always be safely expected from Andrew, was also great to hear them talking about non-binary gender identity. It resonated with me a lot.

For a long time I shied away from doing this because I’ve never been entirely happy within my own assigned gender identity. It’s something I’ve been aware of since childhood but have never done anything about due to social pressures. As a long haired teen I could pass, but as a bald and bearded 40 something that’s no longer the case. Those who have followed my reading lists here may have picked up that I am a trans ally, and Shon Faye’s book The Transgender Issue in particular was brilliant.

We have been encouraged to put our pronouns in our signatures and bios. “Pronouns are shared to avoid assumptions based on appearance. It’s important for us to give our community the opportunity to state their pronouns and by listing your own, it gives others a safe place to list theirs too. Using the correct pronouns is an important way of affirming someone’s identity and is a fundamental step in becoming a Pride ally.”

Until recently we had an openly gay Director, and an MD who was very keen to be open to gender identity issues on account of having a non-binary nibbling (niece/nephew). The Institute of Acoustics have similarly been very supportive of the trans community, as I’ve seen the acceptance of [Emeritus Professor]'s transition.

Seems I'm out in work now. I wrote about it on LinkedIn to explain why I'm flexible about my personal pronouns.
