I'm not an expert on the field of computing and I trust you know much more.
however, ChatGPT is giving me an actual benefit for my work. I use it to cut down on maybe 50% of what I do.
the JavaScript on e.g. Amazon's page that is using a substantial amount of CPU cycles on billions of devices to monitor and log each mouse movement and keypress is considerably worse in my opinion. and the energy consumed will be much higher than ChatGPT's.-

yeah, I have no conception of how much it takes to run. I'm just thinking that it's a limited amount of servers seeing it is just one fairly small company vs. billions upon billions of consumer devices running wasteful things like Windows, JavaScript, gaming etc :ChenShrug: -

grillchen (grillchen@brotka.st)'s status on Friday, 03-Nov-2023 21:36:14 JST grillchen @kaia @wim_v12e chatgpt is bad but might have been a necessary step to make local LLMs more popular over the last year.
it is already a godsend to for many workflows. most fears of its usage is because people misunderstand what it does and misuse it. im absolutely against the use of AI in judicial systems for example.
the energy argument feels dull in times of war, cruise ships, industrialized animal camps.
as soon as it can help the many and not the few people reiterate the British Petroleum ecological footprint tactics.
i hope in the next 1-1.5 years local running gpt tools with open parameters and transparent pretraining will be a common tool, and more energy efficient.
and yes i think it is dumb to generate an AI answer for every search like microsoft wants to do it.
another thing question which remains nonetheless is becoming co2 neutral as a society. talking about chatgpt is a distraction of the actual impactful measures necessarykaia likes this.
