Just that I've honestly been considering acquiring one for seamless telecommunication without having to shill out for a phone. Much more manageable when you can just slot in and out a literal tracking device lmao.
@Maholmire Oh, you mean like a 4G modem, right? You can get those, you can get them as USB dongles, you can order a uConsole ( https://www.clockworkpi.com/uconsole ) and wait several months for it to arrive, they have a 4G modem option.
Don't quote me on this, but my understanding is that it is difficult to get them to do vox, but if you get one that has reasonable drivers, data and SMS work fine under Linux.
Cheers for the recommendation, I'll bookmark that for further reading. I'm not looking for a modem per se than something I can just stick into a USB-C port and make phone calls.
@Maholmire Then that's what you want; check electronics retailers for "4g USB dongle" and stuff like that, you should have some luck, then make sure there are drivers before you buy it. Some phone companies will sell portable battery-powered hotspots, and those are easier to work with (no drivers required, works with whatever device has WiFi) but a little less flexible (like you can't do SMS and you are usually locked into one company instead of being able to swap SIMs).
@Maholmire@dcc@pwm@p They were very popular in certain parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Now that you can hotspot from phones they stopped selling them officially.
