     @blobcat unfortunately I can't think of a single real-world analogue for Fedi, email just seems like the best shot at explaining it even if it's not great.

     federated? oh, they can talk to each other, neat i guess?
     why is no one here except for free software enthusiasts? it’s also quite quiet. eh, i’ll pass, the rest of the internet still has plenty to offer
     
     in my case, back then it was more to the actual community, pre-2014 the rest of the internet wasn’t poisoned yet so other things were more compelling than GS/Fedi
