At this point I just think that university is a luxury good whose cost has far exceeded its value as a class-signaling mechanism since they ruined that too

if you want it for like, education and becoming a better person and stuff like that, well, it's reverted back to only rich people being able to do that like it used to be I guess.

this country is seriously fucking up because it's becoming that the only way to get ahead is sheer hustle. which 1. has a low success rate and 2. most people can't do that, they need a pathway into a stable life that isn't so risky.

@Moon I honestly don't know how valued degrees are for getting hired anymore in tech. Generally when I've reviewed resumes it's not even something that I really looked at. Portfolio, repos and verbal interview were basically all I cared about.

@Moon with the disclaimer that I am not HR or an AI filter and I don't know if not having a degree would automatically stop you at that step.

@condret I know nothing about European universities, unfortunately there are many American universities that are considered prestigious even in Europe.

It's a big issue. About 20% of youth are "disconnected", defined as high school graduates who were neither employed nor enrolled in higher education, high school non-graduates who were employed, young adults who had neither a high school diploma nor employment, and incarcerated individuals in that age group.
