The enshittification of the Internet coincides with the economic shift to mandatory infinite growth so shareholders and CEOs can receive ever more absurd payouts at the expense of sustainable business. This led to increasing commoditization of our time, our data, and our attention. We're not the customers, we're the product.

Which also coincides with the democratic breakdown of treating voters not as decision makers but as a captive audience for whatever the political-moneyed class wants to do.

@gwynnion I don't know if that last part is even a breakdown

communists have been saying for a very long time that the US has a bourgeois democracy where elections are just where you get to choose which representative of the bourgeoisie will be oppressing you

To be fair, the belief in infinite growth was encouraged by tech and the Internet creating new markets, which were turned into a speculative venture capital bubble because the material cost of doing business online seemed so low in the beginning.

Just make a nice website and bam, you, too, could be a millionaire! But that gold rush ended a long time ago and backend and other costs have only grown as the Internet became more sophisticated.
