I learned programming by getting a book from a library, taking it with me on vacation and trying to make a pong clone on my dad's work notebook (some 486 i guess).
i think most kids these days will probably come to it either via webdev or modding games.- Sexy Moon and Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: like this.

@mattskala @lain javascript is broken but with basic you have to actively unlearn shit to learn how to code well -

@Moon @lain Better in what sense? One can do more with Javascript, but I am not sure that people who learn Javascript first end up better programmers than people who learn BASIC first. Javascript programmers all seem to be "copy and modify an existing example" programmers, the kind who are well simulated by ChatGPT. Programming in BASIC isn't like that; every program has to be really new.
But of course by BASIC I mean real BASIC, with line numbers.

@lain Yeah, for me it was modding + IRC bots + webdev that got me into it (I guess I dived head first into the rabbit hole). -

@lain I started learning programming by copying from random youtube tutorial, then by asking stupid questions on programmer forums, where I was recomended a nice book…
Unfortunately, back then I only knew there is some “C” language, so I searched youtube for “c programming tutorial” iirc. Bad starting decision.

my first was on a Laser-310, on which I learnt
10 PRINT fuck 20 GOTO 10kids these days have much more fun ways to learn programming (also a lot more distractions)
