@xarvos @ente
it's no coincidence that the most antisemitic Nazi ideologist Alfred Rosenberg had to fight with people claiming he had "not a single drop of German blood" and that his ancestors were nothing but "Latvians, Jews, Mongols and French."
independent of the truth, that causes a dude to compensate so much...

@kaia @ente most people don't know who they're descended from. I'm not even sure I trust my 23andme report anymore (never give up your DNA to a corporation btw; one of my biggest regrets)

ooh, I'm interested. what did the report say? I'd love to take a test if that was safe (also seeing the recent hack)
my family kept very good records and given there was no extrafamiliar activity, we can go back quite far :comfy: but you never know.

@kaia @ente well it's easier for you europeans because ya'll are not as removed from your ancestry as those of us across he pond.
they started out saying that I was majority NW european (mainly scandiniavian, german/french, and english) with some significant percentages of Italian/Greek and East African ancestry; which mostly matched what I had been told. Fathers side is primarily Italian/German and mother's is scandinavian/british
the east african bit was eventually revised to north african and then disappeared entirely.
My italian side was narrowed down to a small percentage of siciliian while the majority of the rest was narrowed to the london area and some minor metro areas in sweden and scotland.
it mostly mirrored what I already believed about my ancestry, but it wasn't worth the sacrifice of DNA privacy.

@locus @ente
that sounds like an overall reassuring result then if you already expected this outcome :comfy:

@kaia @ente funny you should say that. the ironic thing is I took the test at a time when I had a let's say more white supremacist worldview precisely for the purpose of reassuring myself and now that I've confirmed my whiteness, I've since discarded that cringe.
