There's a rumor that Signal has a vulnerability in relation to link previews (Signal denied it), and so many infosec weridos are saying "you should obviously have disabled that anyway" which is such a fucking absurd claim.
Most hyperlinks alone are contextless random text strings. Why would I click that? Link previews give a title, maybe an image, and a bit of text to let me know if I even want to visit the full site.
I'm rather a tech hater, but link previews have made the web so much nicer, and when people post links and there *aren't* previews, it honestly feels like something is missing. Same with Wikipedia and a link doesn't have a blurb when you hover over it like if you're unfamilar with a term and want the 1 sentence summary without having to navigate to the page. Hyperlink previews (yes in Signal too) are relevant contextual information that helps people make decisions.
Maybe there's something to say about Signal always asking for user consent to generate one to avoid occasionally making requests to websites when it's not actually intended, but that's a completely different argument.
