@AlisonW More generally: (a) don't play divide-and-conquer, it NEVER ends well, and (b) don't supply weapons to fanatics in the hope they'll attack your enemies—when the enemies go away, they'll turn on you.

Exactly. cf American support for the Mujahideen in Afghanistan which led to the Taliban.Don't ask for what you want; you might get it.

Charlie Stross (cstross@wandering.shop)'s status on Sunday, 15-Oct-2023 23:52:42 JST Charlie Stross @AlisonW Hamas is a Frankenstein's Monster of Bibi's own making: he (and Likud) deliberately fostered them in Gaza as an opposition to the less extreme Fatah, who run the West Bank. (Bibi is especially hostile to Fatah as they emerged from the PLO, which his formative experiences centred on fighting. Big irony because Likud emerged from the Irgun who were themselves a radical anti-colonial terrorist group who opposed the more mainstream Haganah prior to Israeli independence.)

That Hamas wants to kill all Jews does not excuse Bibi or Likud from using their overwhelming military forces in this way. Not all Palestinians support Hamas, but they all want to live.
