@limepeep@kitty.social The short story is some guy murdered his pregnant girlfriend (like stabbed her to death I think) and then fled to the HKSAR but couldn't be charged because of the extradition laws in place. So, the pro-Beijing part of the HKSAR tried to amend the laws to tackle this loophole, but reactionary anti-Beijing groups started framing this as a power-grab by the PRC and claimed it would be used by the PRC to extradite residents of the HKSAR to the mainland to face criminal prosecution for laws violated in the PRC. That started the protests, which the government tried to contain, which turned the protests violent, which caused the government to try stamping out the riots, which only led to more riots, etc. etc.. Eventually the riots fizzled out around the time COVID started spreading, the extradition law amendment was withdrawn, and I have no idea what happened to that guy who murdered his pregnant girlfriend.

I heard the crackdowns against the protests were nasty, but I'm not sure if the sovereign government there is worth protecting. I heard that it is a fairly corrupt cappie state, with housing affordability being really horrible (Ex: Cage homes, otherwise awful living spaces).
