"real name" policies are evidence that there are people in charge who have never moved to another country

you wanna know what my real name is? according to whomst, exactly? hell in the US various federal orgs couldn't even agree on what my name was supposed to be. no, scratch that, even the social security administration, internally, couldn't agree on what my name was and changed it like 4 times over a 6 year stay

@eniko the real names policy is about "be called something like Kate Foresworth" and don't be called "SnakesAssIsThicc". It doesn't matter if there's 12 different spellings of Kate you may be known by they'll let you use any of them it's all about keeping out people who only go by handles or who wish to remain anonymous, which is largely trans people, or other minorities. The point is really not to exclude someone who changed their last name

"stop trying to make it all about you, you are an outlier"

      no i'm not. source: https://worldmigrationreport.iom.int/wmr-2022-interactive/

and that's just literal migrants. do you wanna try married women? divorced women? trans people? anyone else who's had to or wanted to change their name for any other reason?

@eniko it's also such a white western view of the world to assume that everyone has one canonical "real" name. other cultures have completely different naming conventions for people, often with contextual usage and repeated changes throughout someone's life.

you could feasibly build a university-level course just studying the modern history (1900-now) of Chinese naming conventions and their interaction with systems and bureaucracies in and out of China. and that's just one country!

@gaycodegal @eniko If someone wants to submit a PR by the name SnakeAssIsThicc, they can and should be able to.

@eniko When people ask me "Is that your real name?", I respond with "It is if you really call me it."

      STOP DOING REAL NAMES

      * NAMES WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO INVOLVE NUMBER THEORY
      * YEARS of GIVEN NAMES yet still NOBODY TO VOLUNTARILY TAKE ONE
      * Want to give a name anyway? We had a tool for that: it was called "PROGRAMMING"
      * "Thats not their GIVEN name. Thats their SUR name" -- statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

Not even, the only way you can have your name never changing even for someone in Europe:
      - No alphabet change and stayed the official language (so no minority language or unofficial one)
      - No marriage/divorce/… specially if you're a women
      - Your parents never had a name change either (their own family name or their first name)
      - Never changed of countries/states (which can happen via frontier changes)

And probably a whole bunch of others I'm not recalling.
