    My theory for why PC gaming is looked at with less nostalgia than console gaming, and is thus less documented:

    While consoles have nine generations, there’s really only two generations of PC gaming: DOS (appr. 1981-2001) and Windows (appr. 2001-Present). The dates are fuzzy, but that’s the general delineation.

    DOS gaming is looked at with lots of nostalgia. Windows gaming, not at all. And it’s not because Windows gaming is bad, it’s because even stuff released in 2001 feels modern since you generally don’t need emulation to run those games.

      I’m looking at PC games released in 2003, and I’m thinking “This looks quite modern”.

      But looks can be deceiving because most games made in 2004 can be adjusted for modern displays. You can run them at 4K. Sometimes this adds a bit of jank, but it’s doable.

      But also, people have been known to modify old games to make them look somewhat modern. Look at some of the mods for Half-Life, and you’ll see what I mean.

      The other factor for why console gaming is looked at with more nostalgia than PC gaming:

      Console games tend to only look one way. But with each PC game, there tends to be variation. Most games have low, medium, high—sometimes ultra settings. And you can get even more granular. I’m not even considering mods.

      When you look at a GameCube game, you tend to think, “That looks like a GameCube game”. Because of wide variations in hardware, no PC game looks uniform.

      @atomicpoet I can’t relate at all.

      I’ve always been a PC master race, only owned one NES compatible cheap console as a little kid but the PC was always there.

      I look at PC gaming with nostalgia because it’s the only gaming I experienced.

      What I’m trying to say is, it depends on the person (and culture) I think. US and Japan are much more console heavy than most other places. Eastern Europe is almost exclusively PC for example, or they own consoles alongside their PCs.
