Believe me, I'm a fan of minimal websites and not using JavaScript and I think most websites could get away with it but I think social media has to have a bit of a richer and more dynamic experience then static websites could offer. However, in my ideal world, we'd return to the paradigm where you actually use client apps for things that need that level of interactivity and dynamism, instead of websites.
