kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Friday, 06-Oct-2023 00:46:22 JST kaia ugly concrete slab seems to be the common element of Jewish museums and Holocaust memorials everywhere. that's kinda dumb, since you associate Jews with otherness and discomfort in students who need to attend outings. -

it's not meant as a joke at all.
yeah, the average German probably never meets a Jew IRL. increasingly with immigration from Muslim countries, there's also a large bias against Jews in general. so instead of focusing on the good qualities or humanizing Jews, those museums manage to make it horrid. -

lexi hexi (lexihexi@blahaj.zone)'s status on Friday, 06-Oct-2023 04:15:37 JST lexi hexi @kaia@brotka.st I have a heard time not reading this like it’s supposed to be a holocaust joke, which I‘d find quite disturbing.
Though I think you wanted to say, that students should also get to visit sites that show Jewish culture and history apart from only seeing holocaust memorials? -

I think that antisemitism is still fairly widespread in Germany same as anti-muslim sentiment. This hatred is all fairly accepted at the average German „Stammtisch“ neatly packed into jokes or “Das wir man ja wohl noch sagen dürfen.” whataboutism and also passed on to the younger generations.
Memorial sites are, as I see it, a very important reminder for students. Especially looking at developments like the increase in votes for the AfD.
The students might feel like they are forced to visit these sites, which is not optimal, but I think seeing these sites is definitely necessary. I agree that visiting holocaust memorial sites, especially former KZs is very unpleasant. It also doesn’t do much for cultural exchange. But it is definitely something all Germans should at some point realise is an important reminder.
I think it would greatly help to have more exchange between the living to work out ways to make sure we learn from the past, and get to work on a better future together. :blobcat_meltheart:kaia likes this.
