an interesting artifact of the way one tends to process language, is that if somebody brings up a Thing by saying "if Thing is true, then this would be the Result", simply by bringing the Thing to our attention and adding it to the list of topics being discussed, one tends to assume that most likely the person believes the Thing really is true, and wants to convince us of it rather than merely point out a hypothetical connection between the Thing and the Result in abstract
