1. A young man in a dark suit is leaning to the side of the painting, by a window frame with a pale gold full-length curtain, while reading a small book in his hands. The other side of the painting is divided into color zones: a pale putty wall hung with 3 indistinct artworks, a dark desk, a white chair whose shield-shaped ribbed back is highlighted against it, a painting turned backward resting on the floor and leaning on the wall, and warm-neutral pale wood flooring with stripes running up and down with the vertical format of the painting. As with most works by this artist, the mood is quiet and somber, yet pale and light-filled more than severe. The contrast of dark and light elements is pronounced. All other colors are muted.
