   Trying to get fiber to my house. Comcast told me it'll take 3 months before I get an answer and cost $320/mo. AT&T told me I would have to petition the city to get fiber. Like by going up and down the street getting people to sign a petition.

     It’s not a matter of technology level. It’s all tied up in local politics. Enough local politicians haven’t been paid off … I mean convinced… to grant a monopoly to a company to get it done.
     
     That being said, once that happens, it’s quite sweet…and nowhere near $320/month. I’m paying $70 for 1 Gb up/down. I could pay up for 2Gb but I don’t need it at all.

     @alex Just as a vaguely interesting point that’s a thing here too, they recently had meetings in a local cricket club trying to find enough households to commit to fibre to justify it.

     @alex @disarray ill come over and help. when i lived in the city my neighbors 2 doors down could get fiber, I had fiber in my house a street over but they would not install it to my home. it was "unavailable" the whole time
