I don't have the links right now, but there are actually a few smart economics that are working on a lot of the problems with CPI: e.g how you can't ignore the fact that you can't buy the equivalent of a 1990s car new for any amount of money, and that distorts prices.
(The econmic way of looking at this is: ok, sure the companies *claim* that all this newtek they put in is the greatest thing, but consumers have no way to show preference. Maybe it would still cost $20k to build the sedan of the 1990s and people would opt for the newtek one for 30k .. but maybe the sedan of the 1990s would cost 8k to buy? )

Also, people like me who have managed to hold on to later model cars are usually still able to work on them. The value they retain are in regards to their ability to be repaired by any garage instead of black box issue that usually plague newer models.
I've seen a lot of complaints of the new tek vehicles having issues with, well the newtek. Various control modules causing failures that are costly. Sometimes even requiring the owner to bring the car in to be exchanged before the dealer warranty expires. This speaks volumes per the dealer warranty because usually the design spec is to outlast that warranty. If these failures are indeed common then I see it being more trouble.
The biggest thing I worry about is actually safety. Newer vehicles have a lot more going for them in terms of crash tolerance and protecting the driver than say something built in the 90s. You're going to have multiple airbag systems and larger crumple zones simply because of the CAFE standards.

@graf @TeaTootler @sickburnbro The 1990s Geo Metro was under 10,000 dollars, it got 50MPG and could seat four people, it's hilarious that overpriced luxury goods like electric and hybrid cars are treated like they're going to save the planet when by every economics and environmental metric they were totally outclassed 30 years ago by a gas engine automobile at a fraction of the cost.

@Moon @graf @TeaTootler @sickburnbro Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift only did 30 mpg. I just flat out refuse to believe claims of 50. They probably could do 33 with insane hypermilling techniques.

There was a Honda crx that got a documented 50+ in the 80s, these cars are killed on purpose because they want us on electric
