     But then they closed by saying they'd always known they were the opposite gender to what they were assigned and they just had to live with it, so why couldn't everyone else?

     I think the saddest email I've ever received came from a person who told me they enjoyed my books – for the most part – but they simply couldn't hold with all these newfangled ideas about gender. They went on at great length about how gender is an immutable fact and blah blah blah and they'd prefer if my books didn't validate the existence of trans people.
