If we substitute /, 1 is the correct answer in almost every programming language, FWIW. That, not generational differences, may be the source of some of the argument.

Also FWIW: there’s a remarkable lack of guidance on this question of order of operations for slashed (solidus) fraction from official math typesetting sources. AMS and IEEE Style guides are silent; Mathematical Writing (Knuth et al) and Mathematics Into Type (Ellen Swanson) say nothing AFAICT.This guide, however, does explicitly state the rule as Ned (and I would expect most mathematicians) understand it:

It’s a partial list; there are many mathematical operators not shown there: exponentiation, functions with parens (f(x)), fns without parens (cos, log, etc), subscripts, sums, integrals, etc etc etc. -
