     Smugness is what one layers over intuition to dull the signal it’s trying to give one that one is wrong about something their peer group insists is right.

     If you pretend your argument is so correct that it's self-evident to anyone with a high iQ, you can keep from having to answer honest criticisms and try to no platform your opposition. That works on the left who is more crowd-driven than the right, although it undoubtedly has a mirror version in rw political sphere.
