   And I think that today's Nazis in the USA and UK are further to the right than Hitler was at this stage of his rise. The Germans didn't just march in and start gassing Jews on Day 1.

     @kierkegaank @juglugs Yeah, white supremacy has always been a con man's trick. Lyndon B. Johnson said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

     @juglugs @cstross we had a population control fetishist (wh*te cishet abled male who's fond of le r slur, of course) run for citywide office here in #Portland and the ecru liberals lost it at being reminded that "population control" never is something you can break bread with.

     And one in particular, who flipped out at me, discussed how "rude" it was because this person knew the guy from church and Nazis weren't Christian.

     And, like, had they not blocked me for the sin of "rude" for not wanting to be a lampshade for wh*te male convenience, I'd have reminded them the quote about how some of the worst Nazis were some sort of good faithful Prot who went to church.

     This person's defense was knowing this guy from church.

     Fortunately, the alt-weeklies outed his population control fetish and he got crushed, but 18% of Portland still voted that most people I know should be lampshades.

     That's fucking *terrifying*.

     @juglugs I also read Hannah Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem. The subtitle is very apt: On the Banality of Evil. She made the point that it wasn't just the handful of monsters and sociopaths at the top, but rather a mass of ordinary, average Germans who enabled and empowered the actions of the state by simply "following orders."

     That postwar excuse was recently used by defendants in the trials of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists.
