@steve@rjmccall Important music education moment for me (relevant, I promise): in a recital in college, I had a terrible memory error (the human kind) in the A♭ major Chopin prelude, and just…utterly clobbered a bar or two. We’re talking “notes off by miles, what key is that even, what just happened” clobbered. Kept going with what shreds of dignity I had left, but felt dejected about it.
@steve@rjmccall …afterward, a friend who’d attended came up to me eagerly warm and effusive about my performance, and especially singled out the one I’d clobbered as her favorite. I said something sheepish about my mistake, and she simply wasn’t having it. She wasn’t going to hear me badmouthing the one she liked!
Tough lesson, but I think I learned it, about just letting people love whatever it is that they experienced regardless of how it felt to me. Spared me a whole lot of heartache since.
