   Media debates about education rarely include kids--the ones going to school and dealing with the daily fallout of arguments had about them but without them.
   What children are, mainly, is fodder -- proof of this or that argument. No one wants reporters to shove microphones in a 10-year-old’s face. But if you’re doing a story about children, shouldn’t you be at least a little bit interested in ...children?

     I’m reminded of when teachers were on strike here in Mpls, and students occupied the admin building. Coverage was mostly about the fight about whether students should be there, admin’s reaction, etc. Occasionally news stories would feature brief quotes from the students; this article is typical:

     Student voices are present, but perfunctory. Nothing there really gets at •why• were students camped out overnight. But…

     …@UnicornRiot actually •did• go over there and stick a mic in the student’s faces, in the words of the OP above, publishing long audio clips of the students’ remarks. The results were striking:

     The students are nuanced, passionate, complicated, fascinating. Letting their own voices be heard not only honored the students as human beings, but made for better news.
