     the coast guard was the only branch to know how important the forward assist would be. it made the tolerances looser so that the ar would be accurate enough in monsoon conditions, which is why charlies would take them and use them every chance they could. the coast guard knew this because they fight on the ocean, where salt would assist things backward. if you notice after they added the forward assist mattel started making the rifles heavier and therefore strong enough to protect freedoms. if you take the lugs off your bolt it'll still run fine, but take out the forward assist and you'll get killed in the streets. it was the most important piece in assisting the forwarding of the development of this platform.
