So why did I become a cop in the first place? Copaganda was very effective at convincing young me that policing was how you protected communities from crime. I now know that the safest communities aren’t the ones with the most cops, they’re the ones with the most resources. But at 19 I didn’t know that. I just knew that I wanted to keep people from being hurt the way I had been by violent crime. I learned quickly that there are no good cops. After 3 years I left.

I know that, from the point of view I had in my little rural town, the economic talking points of 90s conservatives made sense. A mixture of going to business school and experiencing more of the world disabused me of that thinking very quickly. It's okay to get sucked in; you left and try to prevent others from making that mistake.

Their service traumatized them severely, they never saw the big moral mission, they're eternally getting the run-around from the VA, they're tired of the cults of the state and military, and they really don't want others making similar mistakes.
