Hilary more than likely will not hit SoCal full force as a Cat 3-4 or even a Cat 1, because it will be going into much cooler waters prior to final landfall. It will weaken considerably from its present state prior to rolling through. There will be tropical storm force winds and the rains are definitely a real threat, but it's not going to be like Laura pounding Lake Charles in 2010.
It'll be bad enough with the flooding, though.

@blogdiva Having lived on the Eastern Seaboard my whole life, and dealt with the aftermath of hurricanes in the Keys, Mainland Florida, and Vermont all I can say is SoCal should evacuate.
They have NO IDEA what is coming for them. It's not the rain, it's the wind, and that they have spent the last hundred years building structures with no building code requirements meant to deal with 140 mph winds. If this hits LA as Cat 4, or even Cat 3, it's going to be worse than any earthquake. 😬

@whknott it's kind of bananas. if you read the advisory, the Air Force's hurricane hunter couldn't make it to the other side of the hurricane.
let me say this again: THE MOST SOPHISTICATED AIRCRAFTS IN THE USMIL WERE NO MATCH FOR THIS HURRICANE
and yet, it's actually moving slowish? if the winds are ridiculous but the eye is moving slower than the outer lashes? i shudder at the floods and mudslides it's going to cause.

Oh, no doubt. Tropical storm force winds in downtown San Diego and the LA Basin can and will do some damage, and not all minor.
It just won't be the doomsday scenario of Katrina making a direct hit on Long Beach.

@AnthonyJK @blogdiva That's good to hear, but the wind damage will still be considerable in an urban complex that was never required to be able to withstand hurricane force winds. Expect power outages and lots of debris damage and the loss of major percentages of foliage, trees, etc. Mess is an understatement.
