@newt @olmitch Lol, no one that actually knows how much of a trashfire XOrg is and wtf wayland is would make this or send this, you've literally fallen for a meme.
(btw Gnome loves wayland so much they're still crapping themselves with using dbus for everything by default)-

@lanodan @olmitch @newt hot take: x11 and x12 (wayland) are branches of the same toxic tree (x)

@ellenor2000 @olmitch @newt Not really, if there's a thing that's nice with wayland is how they kept the working parts (xkb for example) and tossed the utterly broken bits.
It's not X12 in terms of software, it's X12 in terms of people. -

@lanodan @olmitch @newt x10 has long fallen from the tree thank god, but the two branches that still go on are, well

@lanodan @olmitch @newt people are the roots of the tree. x10, x11 and x12 are the branches. they're diseased because the roots are diseased (the programmers are in over their heads)

@ellenor2000 @olmitch @newt Seethe? You're just pointing fingers at X and related without any apparent reason.
You haven't said more than "X bad", put some damn arguments. -

@coolbeans @newt @ellenor2000 @olmitch AFAIK XCompose has always been a client-side-handled mess, at least I remember it being quite broken on X11 when an Input Method of all the things wasn't used.
And yeah wlroots/sway might be the only one allowing raw xkb configuration files, at the surprise of no one to be honest.
XKB might need a redesign at some point but it's a pretty hard thing to do and I think any kind of replacement is going to end up worse (or being a non-replacement like what's been happening for almost 20+ years on the Desktop Environments side of things). -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @ellenor2000@mastodon.top @olmitch@shitposter.club @newt@stereophonic.space im gonna have to disagree here
i hate the way xkb has been handled on wayland, its already quite suboptimal on x11 (similtaneously super complicated and abstract, to the point of hurting customisation, but also very bare on features)
but the fact of the matter is, the nicer features (Xcompose and Xkeymap files for slightly easier customisation) rely on a display server that isnt there and a compositor would have to reimplement parts of it just to get them working again which considering how much more work goes into developing a compositor already simply doesnt happen a lot (i think sway did it for xcompose and thats about it)
it barely works on x11, and it honestly really doesnt on wayland, its not one of the "working" parts, its a fucking monster unto its own
:hr_redline:
hehe silly string
