   Someone explain this to me. The US has two separate 220V outlet designs? Are they interchangeable?

     @alex Yes they are but I believe it depends on what you're doing. I ran into this problem when I installed my mom's old dryer in a new house.

     Dryers are able to accept either a 3 or 4 prong power cord, so in that way they are interchangable. It really just depends on what type of outlet you have.

     @alex Basically the 3 prong is a positive, a negative, and a neutral that is also a ground. The 4 prong has the neutral and ground separate because there's a chance that the neutral can carry voltage if it gets crossed with the ground in the 3 prong and is an electrocution hazard.

     @graf @alex I am 90% sure the amperage is the same. 3 prong has no grounding prong. It has a metal strap wrapped around the plug, which is an old/unsafe design. 4 prong is the modern, more "safe" design.

     When you buy a cord, the sleeve that it comes in will have directions on how to hook it up to your dryer. Dryer electrical connections are almost universal across the board with only small design changes depending on manufacturer. With the 4 prong there's just an extra step involved for grounding.

     @alex oh yeah, last part...interchangeable as in the have the same amperage and voltage, so it will work if you can get an electrician to unify the plugs and/or you get your own cable (with the funny grounding strap) and make it work.

     @alex the 4 plug dryer plugs have a ground wire that is the difference, there are more than those 2 plugs in the US for 220
