Just saw someone else do this and it seems like a good idea so here goes:
"Introduce yourself with one book, on album, and one movie":
Book: Hardwired by Walter Jon Williams
Album: Transgender Dysphoria Blues - Against Me!
Movie: Dark City

Honorable mention to Chasm City by Alistair Reynolds, it was down to a coin flip between it and Hardwired because I'm actually best represented by two books and one album lol
@Dani it's so fucking good right? IMO, it's up there with Neuromancer — in fact, I think they make a natural pair: Neuromancer is the CYBERpunk and Hardwired is the cyberPUNK. I actually like Hardwired better because of the sociopolitical and class worldbuilding and commentary. And the characters feel more human and personal, and everything feels so much more tangible and actually low life.
@anarchopunk_girl Oh goddamn, Hardwired... 💜
@Dani that's an interesting way of describing the difference, and yeah, I see it — although idk that the world of the Sprawl is all that thickly detailed actually, I think Gibson's focus does seem to be on a sort of drug trip impressionistic painting of the world more than the characters
@anarchopunk_girl To me it kind of feels like... Gibson painted worlds in almost fractal details and then sketched characters to do things in them, Williams imagined fully formed people and then sketched thd parts of the world they'd look at in the way they would.
I love them both.
@Dani it's unique
@Dani it's funny you say that, because Cyberpunk 2020, which was a *very* early and influential member of the genre despite being a TTRPG, was directly inspired by Hardwired and Blade Runner and not at all by Neuromancer iirc
@anarchopunk_girl I could go on... argh. Like Neuromancer feels like (and probably inspired) the stereotypical Cyberpunk (rpg genre) runs... Hardwired is people finding their own goals
@anarchopunk_girl You know there's a cp2020 Hardwired source book right? To say nothing for Sandevistan, Kerenzikov and the cybersnake.
But the overall "default way" structured GM framing with runs/jobs/gigs 100% is more in Neuromancer's style of story arc, you know?
@Dani no yeah I don't disagree about the structure at all, I was just laterally associating a bit lol
