@null Also, I remember having this conversation seven years ago or so and pushing for the public timeline endpoints to be public for specifically this use case (educational use). So the “never intended” argument is false. It was implemented to make it easier to use Mastodon in educational demos/teaching in place of Twitter.
@aral @null without knowing the details, if the endpoint is still there but just requires authentication, can you keep the code more or less the same but with an extra “stick API key on” line?
@borland @null Yep. Could do. Won’t. Much easier to mock some random messages on the server and demonstrate useful skills instead of having N people juml through hoops to get an API key. Just will mean Mastodon won’t get mentioned as much in educational material and conferences 🤷♂️
