James Morris (jmorris@social.kernel.org)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 10:12:44 JST James Morris Load testing my 50v power supply project, using a cheap hot water heater element in water (briefly, < 1 min). Dissipates about 350W. I’m thinking about mounting it into an empty paint can which can hold several gallons. Anyone know if mineral oil would be better than water for this? -

James Morris (jmorris@social.kernel.org)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 13:35:48 JST James Morris @Geojoek yep, I was thinking oil might be able to sustain a higher temperature than 100C. It can, but not by much. This also doesn't need to be an insulator, of course (unlike an RF load). -

Joe (geojoek@mastodon.hams.social)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 13:35:49 JST Joe I’m pretty sure water has a much higher specific heat than mineral oil, so could absorb more heat from the element.
