First time I noticed that Strava now shows "Carbon saved" on rides you mark as commutes, presumably compared to a car journey. Must be new. #BikeCommute

Jason Molenda (jasonmolenda@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 01:13:20 JST Jason Molenda @mario I kind of hate it because every time I see it I think, “how much co2 was emitted for the food I ate”. I doubt that once you calculate it all-in for farming, harvesting, processing, shipping, and preparing, my food powered bicycling is more energy efficient than gas in a car… i say this as someone who commutes to the office nearly every day on a bike, wouldn't give it up, rides like 10,000km/year most years. but this still seems unhelpful to me.

Me personally, I don't think I eat any more on the days that I commute to the office than I do on the days I work from home.
The other thing, for somewhere like here in London, is that the alternative mode of commute if you didn't cycle isn't really the car (hardly anyone commutes into Central London by car), but public transport, so it may also be interesting to compare it to that…
