A country that has an insane "defense" budget of 800+ billion dollars can't afford high speed rail. Or universal healthcare. Or free college. Or safe infrastructure.
Private military contractors gorge themselves on taxpayer dollars, having purchased the House and Senate.clacke likes this. -

They did a tremendous job and I feel privileged to be able to work with them. Without these guys I wouldn't be able to compile all the data

Leon Bambrick (secretgeek@mastodon.cloud)'s status on Saturday, 05-Aug-2023 15:06:01 JST Leon Bambrick @pallenberg I saw just that one prominent line, snaking its way across the nation, but when I started to scroll I realised that was just the crack on my screen cover.

Not the real president (pres_france@oc.todon.fr)'s status on Saturday, 05-Aug-2023 15:06:16 JST Not the real president @pallenberg Sure there are no fast trains in the US, but you've got like 10 to 15 km of tunnels with Tesla clogged in them under Vegas or something, so, take that Europe and Asia ?

Kerry Nice (mothlight@fediscience.org)'s status on Saturday, 05-Aug-2023 15:06:25 JST Kerry Nice @pallenberg Australia has a pretty comprehensive high speed rail system as well. I'm tempted to add a dotted line between Melbourne and Sydney where a high speed line has been promised at every election since the 1980s.

Arguably above the threshold, but apparently they only go that speed on 10% of the route?
