     @brion I took French through high school, but one of my friends took Latin.

     One year he was issued a textbook, opened the cover, and found my father's name on the sign-out page from almost 30 years before.

     I guess dead languages don't change that much.

     i keep saying some day i'll brush up on my german

     in 6th grade we had an introductory language course where over one semester we got a few weeks each of i think french, spanish, and german

     the german teacher was a lovely woman from bavaria who had grown up in alabama

     so she had a southern southern german accent

     our books still had references to east germany

     i think by high school german we had slightly newer books, like *right* after unification, but i only took one level of it because the german teacher (same lady as 6th grade) left the school district for a better paying community college job and the only other qualified german teacher in the district didn't want to teach it and was so depressed he would sometimes just slump at his desk and be sad while we did self study
