Cancelling Metro West at this point would be an absolute disaster, leaving behind a literal multi-billion-dollar money pit.
This is not a proposal on the drawing boards at this stage. This is not an engineering proposal.
The land for the station sites has been acquired. Utilities relocated. Streets closed. Buildings demolished. Land cleared. Geotechnical exploration completed. Temporary structures at sites constructed. Pits dug. Tunnel boring machines imported, transported, assembled.
Those tunnel boring machines are digging a tunnel under Sydney right now.
Billions have already been spent on building this thing so far.
To me, it just seems absurd that the NSW state government would even consider abandoning the project and just leaving an empty tunnel under Sydney.
And all this uncertainty for the pantomime of showing the Murdoch press that Minns is fiscally responsible.
