@chjara While terminals emulators are about as futuristic as a NES emulator. :D

@a13cui GPU acceleration for a terminal actually doesn't makes sense, it's literally just a gimmick.
      (And Rust is anti-distro)

The real things that should have been done would have been a decent way to lay UIs without being stuck to a programming language. (See Plan9 where you can literally make your stuff in shell)
TTYs should have been gone by now.

@lanodan I mean, you CAN make some innovations, GPU acceleration being a relatively recent example and I think also squiggly underlines. Or be a gimmick like Warp or Kitty. :) It's honestly a game of how nice you can make the UI + if it's made in Rust (cuz that's how you attract all soypeople (not just soyboys, we're inclusive here!))

It's not a completely dry place, but I think at this point you're just doing more integration with the shell itself rather than just pure UI/UX things (imo)

@a13cui I don't think ttys will be gone soon, but I sure want them gone from my machine or at least gone from the main way of interfacing with the OS. (Like DOS is still there via dosbox but that's fine)

@lanodan I am not sure if I agree with the first paragraph, but I strongly agree with the second one.

People are really sleeping on Plan9 and Oberon. I don't think TTYs will be gone since for one Unices still exist, for better or for worse depending on who you ask

@a13cui Those are the same thing, except ptys also became an extra way of having TTYs, just not ones linked to VTs like /dev/tty* are.

@a13cui I do want a console where I can write commands and stuff, I don't want a computer that's as locked down as a video game console.

But vt200 emulators and the like should have been gone already.

@lanodan I don't mind TTYs, not even in Windows, plus I think in this modern day and age you can get by without using the terminal on Linux and macOS and Windows users barely know Command Prompt or PowerShell exist
