(And Rust is anti-distro)
The real things that should have been done would have been a decent way to lay UIs without being stuck to a programming language. (See Plan9 where you can literally make your stuff in shell)
TTYs should have been gone by now. -

chsh -s /usr/bin/pwsh $USER (a13cui@emacs.ch)'s status on Tuesday, 01-Aug-2023 19:35:15 JST chsh -s /usr/bin/pwsh $USER @lanodan I mean, you CAN make some innovations, GPU acceleration being a relatively recent example and I think also squiggly underlines. Or be a gimmick like Warp or Kitty. :) It's honestly a game of how nice you can make the UI + if it's made in Rust (cuz that's how you attract all soypeople (not just soyboys, we're inclusive here!))
It's not a completely dry place, but I think at this point you're just doing more integration with the shell itself rather than just pure UI/UX things (imo)

(Like DOS is still there via dosbox but that's fine) -

People are really sleeping on Plan9 and Oberon. I don't think TTYs will be gone since for one Unices still exist, for better or for worse depending on who you ask

But vt200 emulators and the like should have been gone already. -
