   "Choosing an instance isn't difficult, I think people are overstating that."

   Okay, now find an instance that:

   * Isn't defederated from some significant portion of my friend group.

   * Isn't defederated _from_ by the same.

   * Doesn't defederate from major news sources running on their own instances.

   * Has reasonable moderation.

   * Will actually be here tomorrow and not just fold.

   * Has reasonable uptime.

   * I can trust to not to keep an unencrypted copy of the database on a personal device.

     @hrefna Adding to this that most of this wouldn't be that much of an issue if migrating your account to another instance wouldn't mean losing all your public posts and private messages, at least on Mastodon.

     @cubeofcheese I'd love a tool for it, it's a relatively difficult exercise for an individual to go through without tooling.

     Let me see if I can find (in the terrible search system, so no promises) the specifics, but IIRC there was a lot of objection to it "scraping" without permission. Along with some concerns about potential abuses (unspecified as to what that might look like, again IIRC).

     @hrefna oh weird what was the backlash? I feel like having insight into what my instance is de/federating with is really important. I have been considering making a tool for it.

     @cubeofcheese Lots of going through /about pages. Sometimes creating trial accounts.

     There was a tool for this until it received a lot of backlash, so now there isn't that I know of.
