@georgetakei It’s naive to believe today’s republicans are vastly different. Many of trump’s most prominent and enthusiastic supporters have been around for decades, some going back to the Nixon days. Republicans have no problem with government overreach when it in their interests. Their only principle is and always has been protecting power, status, and wealth.
@georgetakei Conservatives have had authoritarian tendencies before, from Mussolini to Pinochet to Francisco Franco and (you could say) Margaret Thatcher. What's different this time is the quasi-religious trappings of this one man, complete with messianic and martyrdom references. It looks like this movement will not only have to be defeated at the polls but destroyed utterly and its adherents deprogrammed, since those who come out of the trance claim they were brainwashed...
