@kirby >Gnu being hostile towards libreboot.
GNU enjoyers are hostile towards proprietary software branded as "libre", who would have thought?

@icedquinn >fsf likes to friendly fire a lot
I only like to shoot at proprietary software, therefore anything I like shooting at cannot possibly be friendly.

      >oh no your distro allows someone to use a computer mouse with closed firmware jihad now
What are you even on about?

The free system guidelines requirements are that the system is 100% free software (and any mistakes are corrected within a reasonable time-frame), the system doesn't recommend proprietary software (this includes avoiding naming proprietary software in the documentation if there's no good reason to name it) and not restricting the software that the user can run (this includes permitting the user to install proprietary malware if they choose to - as all free systems don't restrict what you can install).

It's a sad fact that most computer mouses technically run software that is proprietary, but GNU realizes that currently there's bigger priorities at the moment, but welcomes free peripheral software from mouses if someone writes it.

@kirby >sometimes I dodge bullets by using bsd occasionally
While you think you're dodging bullets, you're dodging into them, considering that every last BSD is proprietary software currently.

@icedquinn >almost everything in your computer has proprietary firmware and there is little to nothing you can do about it.
So I should immediately give up?

A lot of the peripheral software can be replaced via difficult reverse engineering and a hardware flasher, so there's more than a little that you can do about it, but I have bigger issues to deal with first.

I go out of my way to ensure my mice have no firmware like that, and no extraneous drivers

But yeah, the fsf can punch rocks

      You're retarded.
No one complained about Debian because they allow installing nonfree blobs, you can do that on any FSF endorsed distro. The problem with Debian is that they feel entitled to put nonfree blobs out of the box when that goes against their own guidelines, just for complacency to a bunch of fucking normietards that can't be arsed to enable nonfree repos and install that shit themselves, they literally solved no problem because you could install Debian on shitty hardware that requires blobs beforehand using the nonfree community ISOs, all they did is just remove the official free ISOs and let you stuck wth the community ones like it or not, so much for the "freedom of choice" the OSImps keep rambling about.

@gray >There is a fully open router distro called LibreCMC
LibreCMC is a fully free version of "Open"WRT designed to be free, rather than being "open".

      >there was a point where the various FCC type organizations required manufacturers to lock down there firmware so people can't screw around with the radios in the devices.
      This is untrue.

The FCC has added some more braindead requirements about restricting radio functionality, but there's nothing in the requirements that requires implementing such restrictions with proprietary software or digital handcuffs.

The restrictions could be implemented purely in hardware (what would actually be somewhat effective at achieving what the FCC wants), but every single manufacturer has decided to go with proprietary software obfuscation instead.

      >OpenWRT wouldn't work on anything if they didn't use the blobs.
I know of one or two devices that "Open"WRT supports with images that don't seem to contain proprietary software, as it seems that such devices don't require such.

@icedquinn @histoire @kirby I saw someone freaking out about OpenWRT having proprietary firmware blobs in it and thus not being "open."

There is a fully open router distro called LibreCMC that only works on 10 year old routers because there was a point where the various FCC type organizations required manufacturers to lock down there firmware so people can't screw around with the radios in the devices. OpenWRT wouldn't work on anything if they didn't use the blobs.
