Can anyone point me to a link about #mastodon #fediverse #content distribution #algorithms that explains the treatment of comments-as-posts vs posts?

It seems like the expectation is that they are the same, but that does not appear to be the case. It could be just the differences between the accounts generating the posts that I'm commenting on, but it feels like in general, comments (even well-written, lengthy responses with #hashtags) disappear into the wind, while any basic post, directly submitted to the stream gets #engagement.

Does someone have a "who sees your post" flowchart for Masto that includes #comments?

If I understand correctly, there is no residual #information on user and/or post #Quality being used in the algorithm?

This also has relevance for discussions about intra-network content #curation, #factcheck, #reputation, and other #SocialMedia #community functions that could be getting shortchanged by the current protocols & other norms.

The content you see from your server depends on what your server has noticed.

Here's a list of what content servers notice: https://fedi.tips/which-posts-and-accounts-can-i-see-from-my-server/

Also, some content may be invisible to you if your server has blocked the server where the content is.

      @menesturo @exador23

From what I can tell, there are +feedbacks like those (increasing footprint of content), and -feedbacks like #Privacy settings that constrain the potential flow of #information.

This makes it much harder to learn from experimentation alone.

@exador23 @MalthusJohn not an expert, but i suppose the reblogging button is an important aspect, because any comment reblogged can be viewed both from personal followers (from various istances) and local istance users

@MalthusJohn there is no algorithm here.

your venn diagram is correct to my limited knowledge. but if you "boost" any reply (including yours) it will then become visible to your followers.

@feditips - Thanks. I take it since the original post is sorted according to those server rules, any comment on those posts would too.

I'm not sure that answers the personal connection settings side of the question though, using the home stream.

It is possible that personal #privacy settings over-ride the servers, right?

IE, what happens when someone makes a closed/private to followers only comment on a public post, or a public comment on a followers only post? (changes settings)

Can a situation happen where you could see a comment with no other visible content (OP, other comments) visible, or a post with many comments but none visible to you?

Or, as I've seen suggested, if you can click open a post, all comments are visible? (Or if you clicked a comment in your stream, the OP would open for you even if you don't follow them, and it's on another server.)

If a reply's visibility is set to followers-only and you're not a follower of the author, the reply will be invisible to you.
