      cryptobros are truly ruining everything, one can no longer talk about distributed systems because the conversation always derails into crypto

      @y i mean cryptocurrency can be nice examples sometimes and there's novelty in them a lot of the time, especially monero and stuff like that
      but i wish they weren't the only "reason" to talk about these things

      @helene @y tox, actually and "why isn't fedi using a p2p system" (we should be developing a p2p naming system)

      yes I think you're right, personally it helped me a lot because the area was getting boring after the death of the 2000s big p2p networks, but everytime I try to talk about consensus people think that I'm talking about Nakamoto's consensus which is frustrating

      also the lack of formalism in the cryptocurrency space makes somewhat difficult to do research work on top of it

      @y depends which
      btc and xmr tend to formalise a lot, others probably do too
      but it does suffer a lot from the "i'm programming" thing for something that needs to be rock solid and based on a lot of mathematical concepts and theory

      imo, the btc original paper is horrible in that regard but maybe things are getting better

      honestly, research in distributed systems in general is historically very formal (with a lot of theorical proofs and stuff like that) and phreaps shouldn't be that way anymore, idk ?
