yaxisbtc :bitcoin: (y@pasta.wtf)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:08:29 JST yaxisbtc :bitcoin: cryptobros are truly ruining everything, one can no longer talk about distributed systems because the conversation always derails into crypto Hélène likes this. -

Hélène (helene@p.helene.moe)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:10:30 JST Hélène @y i mean cryptocurrency can be nice examples sometimes and there's novelty in them a lot of the time, especially monero and stuff like that
but i wish they weren't the only "reason" to talk about these things -

yaxisbtc :bitcoin: (y@pasta.wtf)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:22:49 JST yaxisbtc :bitcoin: yes I think you're right, personally it helped me a lot because the area was getting boring after the death of the 2000s big p2p networks, but everytime I try to talk about consensus people think that I'm talking about Nakamoto's consensus which is frustrating Hélène likes this. -

yaxisbtc :bitcoin: (y@pasta.wtf)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:23:41 JST yaxisbtc :bitcoin: also the lack of formalism in the cryptocurrency space makes somewhat difficult to do research work on top of it Hélène likes this. -

Hélène (helene@p.helene.moe)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:25:09 JST Hélène @y depends which
btc and xmr tend to formalise a lot, others probably do too
but it does suffer a lot from the "i'm programming" thing for something that needs to be rock solid and based on a lot of mathematical concepts and theory -

yaxisbtc :bitcoin: (y@pasta.wtf)'s status on Friday, 16-Sep-2022 22:35:27 JST yaxisbtc :bitcoin: imo, the btc original paper is horrible in that regard but maybe things are getting better
honestly, research in distributed systems in general is historically very formal (with a lot of theorical proofs and stuff like that) and phreaps shouldn't be that way anymore, idk ?Hélène likes this.
