The only time to do more is if you can personally benefit from it, unfortunately. If I'm a burger flipper at McDonalds, I have no incentive to be better at my job.

@Dwalrus @Xenophon @Bobson I don't think anyone who has actual, real promotion potential in a non-psychopathic company, however few of those still exist, should be lazy. They also shouldn't work 80-hour weeks (well, that's their business, but I wouldn't except in very rare circumstances).
On the other hand, I don't blame any retail/food service worker these days for being kind of lazy like Self-Help Singh says. I appreciate the ones who work hard, but they work hard because of an inner drive to do the "right thing," not because of some desire to help the company succeed.
I guess those are the types who end up moving out and up to other, more worthwhile careers anyway.
