   I just want to know if I can simply copy the Android folder over with USB file transfer from the old phone to my computer, and then to my new phone, and if there is some way that I can stop that data from passing through Google's servers as an unnecessary extra step.

     @pettter not sure how relevant it is these days, but back in ye olde days of Android "there was an app for that". As I recall, I used "Titanium Backup" to migrate stuff between phones.

     @ericj Possibly something like that could work, but it's bloody impossible to figure out which of those are defunct, which still work, which do what you want, which have ads and will just straight up steal your data just as greedily as Google does, etc. etc.

     All I want is for phone 1 to talk to phone 2 and transfer the data in an orderly fashion.

     @ericj Titanium Backup seems to require a rooted phone, which neither of mine are.

     @pettter Just to copy an Android folder when switching from phone A to phone B sounds as impossible as if you try to copy your C:\Windows\ folder between two machines and then expect it to work. It won't, I'm afraid. :-/

     @optimiced Mm. The thing is that you could Just Do That for a long time over on various Linux distros - just copy your $HOME, install the same packages from the package manager, and it'll Just Work.

     I thought that giving in and letting Google Do The Thing and backup/restore "apps and app data" would actually, you know, actually transfer app data.

     Well, uh... Newsflash I suppose?

     Ok I'm approaching having migrated most things and I dunno, at this point I'm honestly not sure if the Google backup/restore thing actually helped or hindered. I think mostly helped on balance, but definitely not sure if enough to motivate the bypass through the Google surveillance machine.

     Oh well.
