     for all the shit that people give tech companies on here they have a better track record than other industries at trying to keep onerous regulations away from their users. Banks are just like "we have to report transactions over 800 dollars to the federal government now". I know why they are like this, but it is still grating.

     banks: enriching their shareholders from all over the world by extracting value from the bank members
     
     credit unions: enriching their shareholders from *checks notes* the local community, essentially, by extracting value from the credit union members and pretending that they are focused on investing in the local community (as if they're being charitable and should be lauded for it)

     if credit unions weren't also a giant piece of shit they'd have interest rates that reflect it, but no -- mine, which is one of the largest, is still doing 0.10% on deposit accounts. (a few years ago it was 0.03% !!!!)
