   Interestingly – and given my increasing and yet still rather limited sample size – it seems radon levels are higher during rain.

   (I got a real-time radon sensor a little while back to see what the levels are like in our 70-year-old rental house. Spoiler: they’re not great but they’re within Irish safety limits. Not that there’s any safe level of radon, from what I’ve read.)

     @samebchase The ground – from uranium in rocks, to be precise:

     “Radon is a radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. It is formed in the ground by the radioactive decay of uranium which is present in all rocks and soils. You cannot see it, smell it or taste it. It can only be measured with special detectors. Radon can cause lung cancer when exposed to high levels over a long period of time. Every year in Ireland, radon causes about 350 cases of lung cancer.”

     @aral Thanks for the nudge, Aral. We moved into a house with granite worktops in the kitchen, and granite emits radon. It's past time I checked it.

     Do you have any tips on buying a radon sensor?

     @aral That's interesting. I only heard of sample kits that have to be in a room for several months (if not a year). What kind of real-time sensor is it?

     @MariaLiv (It’s only really an issue if houses are not built properly and it accumulates in much greater than normal quantities. Outside, of course, it dissipates.)
